A Legacy of Giving
1920s
Community Chest Established
In the 1920s, a group of community-minded individuals introduced the Community Chest to Otero County, creating a way for local residents to combine their donations and provide support for essential community services. This early effort reflected a simple but powerful idea: by working together, neighbors could make a greater impact.
mid-1900s
United Fund Created
Over time, the Community Chest evolved into the United Fund, creating a more organized approach to collecting and distributing resources to organizations serving residents across the county. This transition allowed community support to become more intentional, ensuring local needs were met through thoughtful funding decisions.
1960s
United Way of Otero County
In the 1960s, the United Fund became the United Way of Otero County, joining a national movement while remaining locally governed and focused on the unique needs of Southern New Mexico. The mission continued – strengthening the community by connecting donors, volunteers, and nonprofit organizations.
